Mommy Makeover

What is a Mommy Makeover?

Having kids is something delightful and irreplaceable, but for most women, pregnancy can also bring about unfavorable effects on their bodies. Dr. Roehl and Dr. Hsu take pleasure in helping women from Clear Lake and the greater Houston area to restore their pre-pregnancy bodies. A Mommy Makeover procedure combines multiple surgical procedures in a single operation to alter the post-pregnancy changes in a mother’s body. Typically, the procedure consists of a tummy tuck and some type of breast surgery (breast lift, breast augmentation).

The Effects of Pregnancy on the Female Body

PREGNANCY EFFECTS ON THE ABDOMEN

Muscles found in the abdomen are stretched after childbirth. Also known as rectus abdominis muscle, pregnancy causes these to separate in the midline. After it separates, no amount of exercise can reconnect them. The only option to restore the abdominal muscles in their pre-pregnancy condition is through surgery like Mommy Makeover.

PREGNANCY EFFECTS ON THE SKIN

One of the biggest concerns of women after pregnancy is the appearance of new stretch marks. Stretch marks are caused by the rapid growth of the baby, stretching the abdominal skin before it has completely adjusted. Along with stretch marks is loose, hanging skin in the abdomen which diet and exercise cannot fully fix. This gives mothers an unattractive bulge in their lower abdomen.

PREGNANCY EFFECTS ON THE BREAST

Breasts naturally enlarge during pregnancy to make room for breastfeeding. However, after breastfeeding, they can be quite problematic when the breasts become stretched and saggy due to loss of volume. Many women experience this deflation – downsizing at least one cup.

The Best Candidates for Mommy Makeover

Mothers who suffer from the following effects of pregnancy are the ideal candidates for a mommy makeover:

  • Sagging breasts due to volume loss
  • Unproportioned breast size to your body
  • Drooping nipples and stretched areolas
  • Stretch marks and loose skin in your tummy

Risks Associated with Mommy Makeover

As with any other plastic surgery procedure, a mommy makeover also comes with possible complications. Since it involves multiple procedures in one operation, the chances of risks may be higher. Nonetheless, mommy makeovers are relatively safe, risks are rare, and satisfaction rates are high. Some of the possible risks are:

  • Bleeding and infection (hematoma)
  • Changes in skin sensation
  • Blood clotting in the legs or lungs
  • Unfavorable scarring
  • Need for revision surgery

Preparing for Mommy Makeover

During your consultation, your medical history and existing medical conditions are assessed by our surgeons. They may also perform a physical exam to determine if you are fit for a mommy makeover procedure. This will determine the possible surgical options you may take.

Our surgeons will do their best to answer inquiries regarding the surgery, its costs, recovery period, downtime, risks, their experiences in performing mommy makeovers, and the like. Click to learn more about Dr. Roehl and Dr. Hsu.

Here are some preparation tips to ensure better results of a mommy makeover:

  • Stop smoking for a month or two after the procedure. Doing so impedes blood flow which can negatively affect healing.
  • Do not perform strenuous activities like vigorous exercise, heavy lifting, and tiring household chores for 4-6 weeks after the procedure.
  • Wear the compression garments our surgeons will give you to reduce the swelling of the areas treated.
  • Eat a healthy diet (proteins, whole grain, fruit, and vegetables) and drink plenty of fluids to stimulate healing.
  • Do not expose your incisions to direct sunlight to lessen the scarring marks.
  • Avoid submerging yourself in tubs, Jacuzzis, and pools. This may introduce bacteria and cause infection to your wounds.

Mommy Makeover Procedure Length

In general, mommy makeovers take about 2-4 hours using general anesthesia for the patient’s comfort. For standalone procedures, local sedation can be used but since mommy makeovers involve multiple extensive procedures, general anesthesia is typically used.

After Mommy Makeover

You can expect to swell and bruising after the procedure, but these will subside as you go through your recovery. Mild pain and discomfort are relatively normal once the anesthesia wears off, and these will be easily controlled by medications our surgeons will prescribe.

Mommy Makeover Recovery Time

The length of your recovery period is determined by the procedures included in your mommy makeover surgery. Typically, the full recovery period lasts for about 6 weeks. You may already return desk job work after 2-3 weeks. Below are some tips that you should observe for a better recovery period and result:

Mommy Makeover Scarring

Since it involves multiple procedures, mommy makeovers can leave visible scarring. However, our surgeons go the extra mile to keep the scars minimal and inconspicuous.

  • Tummy Tuck – The incision in this procedure stretches from one hip to the other, just above the pubic area. It is relatively long, but the scar will be easily concealed since it rests on the bikini line.
  • Breast Augmentation or Breast Lift – Most of the scars involved in the two procedures are placed along the natural contours of the breast. There may be incisions placed on the surface of the breast, but these will fade considerably over time.
  • Liposuction – Smaller scars are the outcomes of this procedure because only small cannulas are used.

Your New Look After Mommy Makeover

While it may take a few months for your body to settle on its new figure, the results of a mommy makeover are immediately noticeable after the procedure. Mommy makeovers bring mothers their pre-pregnancy bodies back – with a shapelier figure, a firmer tummy, and more evened breasts.
