Lily Collins’ Plastic Surgery

The celebrity world is teeming with gossip this week as Lily Collins is suspected to have undergone plastic surgery. The news comes from a series of pictures taken last Tuesday, November 15, in New York City where the 27-year-old model/actress promoted her new film, Rules Don’t Apply. The sudden change has sparked speculation amongst fans and experts.

According to a recent poll, 78% of experts do not believe she underwent plastic surgery. The poll brings to light a growing trend as more and more young women are opting for plastic surgery procedures, as evident from a 2014 study conducted by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) that reported a increase of female patients between the ages of 20 to 29.

Plastic Surgery Trends in Younger Women

If anything, the trend is a sign of the times: Selfies have become a mainstay in today’s social media-driven landscape, with many women finding assurance in a number of likes their selfies generate across outlets like Facebook and Instagram. Celebrities such as Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian are inspiring younger women to be more conscious about their appearance, even encouraging their audiences to undergo plastic surgery, just as fashion-icon/comedienne Joan Rivers had done for the generation before.

“Plastic surgery is no longer taboo,” says Dr. Roehl. “Women and men seek it out and are not afraid to talk about it any longer. To have cosmetic procedures had become mainstream and is no longer the exception. We have social media and reality TV to thank for that.”

Which brings up a strong point: compared to older generations who have felt the need to hide their procedures, today’s women are more inclined to show off the results of their procedures on social media. For them, it is a way of taking control of their bodies, building self-confidence and ensuring that they look as close to their ideal selves as possible.

“Young patients must seek the advice of a board-certified plastic surgeon before undergoing any kind of procedure”, advices Dr. Roehl. “I can not stress this enough.”

For many experts, it is important to take age as a consideration before taking on a client. While many women see plastic surgery as a means to complete themselves, aligning their goals with what’s natural to their bodies is a top concern to many experts in the field, just as it is equally important that the board-certified surgeon they consult with is properly trained and equipped to meet their needs and expectations.

“Even if a patient is of legal age, her body may not be fully developed yet to appropriately handle such changes”, says Dr. Roehl.  “Any changes, surgical or otherwise, can have a drastic effect on the body as it develops. The future well being of my patients comes before anything else.”

Ultimately, it does not matter if Lily Collins underwent plastic surgery. As long as there’s a thriving entertainment industry, there will always be gossip around celebrities and plastic surgery. What matters is that it does not influence a prospective patient’s decision. While aesthetic goals can help people envision their ideal selves, it’s not everything. Every single person has a unique body that requires its own unique approach when handled by a board-certified surgeon. Under the right care, plastic surgery is a fulfilling decision that will last a lifetime.
